Houston’s getting a new cool-concept brewery, yall!
Urban South Brewery HTX, located in Houston’s Sawyer Yards, is currently getting its finishing touches and 2 Girls Who Travel were invited to check it out.
So you know we got you! Keep reading for all you need to know about Urban South Brewery HTX.
We had the opportunity to speak with Marin Slanina, Urban South’s Taproom & Marketing Manager, and she shared the history, vision and goals for the new 14,000-square-foot brewhouse. In addition to Slanina, who works on the event and party side, are R&D Brewer Justin Slanina and General Manager & Brewer Dave Ohmer.
Let’s start by saying how gorgeous Urban South’s space is. Uber-talented muralist Nicky Davis created a stunning masterpiece that adorns the wall as you walk in towards the bar area.
Slanina says, “The whole space has a retro chic, whimsical and all-around fun vibe to round out your craft beer experience that’s really over the top.”

The whole space is very “instagrammable,” even the bathroom! The paint is too cute and it’s done by hand. Another big plus – they have four bathroom stalls for the ladies. So no waiting!
The Houston location is the second location of Urban South Brewery, which is based in New Orleans, LA and has been open for three years. The NOLA location is primarily production and distribution. In fact, they are the number two distributed craft beer in state of Louisiana.
In Houston, Urban South will have more of a tap room and event-driven space experience for guests. The brewery will produce all the beer that will be on draft out of the system with different brewers, recipes and ideas.
“It’s an awesome system that’s very technically savvy to create a well-executed product. Any style you can think of we’ll push boundaries to execute very strongly,” says Slanina.
Urban South HTX has eight full tanks – pale ales, IPAs, grisettes, pilsners, kettle sour, fruited kettle sours and more…
According to Slanina, the Urban South HTX brewers (Justin and Dave) will create 25 different beers and leave her five open spots that she’ll fill with draft kombucha, cold brew coffee, red and white wine on draft and draft cider.
Now with all these great drink options, we’re sure you’re wondering about food. Well, no worries… Urban South Brewery plans to partner with food providers and have daily food offerings. Think pop-up dinners, food trucks and fresh pastry cases.
This legit will be a superb spot to book your parties! Urban South HTX has a sizable bar area with TVs and two private event spaces – one that holds about 50 people seated comfortably and the larger space that holds about 100 to 150 people. So plenty of options for all your party needs.
Now there is one concern we had and Slanina knew right away. The location of Urban South HTX is on Oliver Street and has a lot of construction happening these days, which is due to be complete sometime in April. Until that time, “street closed” signs are making your GPS useless. But don’t fret, Urban South is aware of the confusion during this construction time and will provide great directions to all their patrons, so that they can avoid the closures. (Tip from us – look for the Sonic and the Shell gas station)! And as an added plus – they have lots of parking.
Now that we got you all excited and ready for an awesome craft beer, the next question is when are they opening? Save the date for Urban South Brewery’s grand opening on February 29, 2020 at 1201 Oliver St., #10, Houston, TX 77007.
We can’t wait to taste those pale ales and kettle fruit sours!
